Best Online Grief & Loss Treatment & Therapy | New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts

Grief is an emotional experience or a process in response to any loss or ending of something or someone that has meaning to us. Grief is a natural, normal part of life, but everyone experiences it differently. While there is not one way to experience grief and loss, some common feelings include sadness, anger, guilt, and depression.

Grief is a process. There is no right way to experience it. Depending on the nature of the loss, grief can be short-lived, or take years to work through.

At Mood Clinic we understand that grief is not a linear process. When grief becomes persistent or prolonged, or interferes with daily living, it can be problematic.

We offer predominantly online treatment and therapy for grief recovery. Working consistently with an understanding and empathetic online therapist can help you move through your grief and liberate you from the pain of your loss so you can get back to living your life again.

Online therapy is as effective as in person therapy, and it has many advantages, such as convenience, accessibility, and flexibility.

You don’t have to let your grief interfere any longer. Schedule a consultation with Mood Clinic and start healing today.

Understanding Grief and Loss

Grief is a deep feeling of sorrow experienced after significant loss. Usually we associate grief with death, but grief can occur with any loss, such as job loss, or end of a relationship. It can also occur when there is an impending loss, such as with a serious, long-term or terminal illness.

Almost everyone experiences grief at some point. Most people go through the 5 stages of grief, often vacillating among them for a time. The 5 stages of grief are:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

There is no timeline for the grief process, as it is vastly unique for everyone. A person’s background, beliefs, personality, and the type of loss may dictate how they process grief and the length of time it may take.

Grief comes with a lot of mental stress. Feelings of yearning, confusion, anger, and separation anxiety are all common. When grief persists and starts to interfere with daily functioning, for more than six months or longer, it can lead to mental health disorders, such as Complicated Grief Disorder.

If you have complicated grief, you may feel overwhelmed with the loss, with a strong sense of denial. You will likely avoid or push away anything that reminds you of the loss.

Complicated grief can cause long-term physical and mental health concerns, such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Substance abuse
  • Malnutrition
  • Dehydration
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Lowered immune system

Symptoms of Grief

Grief doesn’t just affect us emotionally. It can affect our thoughts, feelings, our physical body, and our behaviors. Grief often comes in waves and may hit you out of nowhere or when you least expect it. Grief symptoms may also feel confusing or conflicting as well. Common symptoms include:

Psychological (thoughts, feelings, and emotions)

  • Sadness
  • Numbness
  • Shock
  • Anger
  • Guilt or remorse
  • Helplessness
  • Yearning

  • Preoccupation or distraction

Physical

  • Tightness or heaviness in the chest
  • Tightness or choking feeling in the throat
  • Nausea or stomach upset
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Weakness, fatigue, or lethargy

In addition to the physical and emotional symptoms, grief can make it difficult to concentrate, focus, or make decisions. It can be difficult to keep track of responsibilities and interfere with your day-to-day life.

Symptoms of Complicated Grief Disorder

  • Feeling intense longing or emotional pain that interrupts your daily living

Treatment & Therapeutic Options for Grief and Loss at Mood Clinic

When it comes to grief recovery, Mood Clinic combines several, evidence-based therapeutic techniques and tailors a plan for you based on your needs.

Grief recovery with Mood Clinic is holistic and highly-personalized to address your symptoms and the underlying cause of them.  We’ve found that a combination of CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, work well in managing grief:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – We use a CBT approach to help you examine and process challenging thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and find new perspectives and solutions for them.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – DBT is a type of talk therapy that can help foster an understanding of emotions and help with emotional regulation. It’s useful for individuals dealing with intense emotions or certain mental health conditions to learn radical acceptance and make positive changes. There is an element of mindfulness and stress reduction technique within this type of therapy as well.

Medication may also be appropriate for some patients, depending on their symptoms and level of grief. When we use medication as part of a grief treatment plan, we will work closely with you to achieve maximum symptom reduction with the lowest effective medication dose.

It’s important to minimize side effects and tailor treatment to your needs.
