Best Online Insomnia Treatment & Therapy | New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes falling asleep or staying asleep difficult. High stress, on-the-go lifestyles, and increased use of technology have contributed to a rise in insomnia among people in the US. Insomnia has become commonplace, affecting 1 in 3 adults in the US.

Insomnia can be mild or can become chronic. If it becomes chronic, it can result in long-term consequences on our overall health and well-being. Insomnia can affect your quality of life by interfering with your energy levels, mood, health, and performance.

Regardless of the severity, insomnia can be treated.

While the symptoms may be similar for everyone, what causes insomnia for one person, won’t be the same for another. That’s why it’s important to take the time to identify and treat the underlying cause of your insomnia, not just your symptoms.

At Mood Clinic we treat insomnia in a holistic and personalized way.

We offer insomnia treatment services predominantly online. In today’s busy times, online therapy gives us a level of flexibility and accessibility that we didn’t have before. It’s convenient and allows us to stay in the comfort and safety of our own environments.

Understanding Insomnia

Whether it’s because you can’t fall asleep, or you frequently wake in the middle of the night, lack of sleep from insomnia can lead to a level of stress that interferes with your thinking, and performance and affects your ability to do your daily activities.

If you have difficulty sleeping at least three nights a week and it continues for at least one month, you may have chronic insomnia, also known as persistent insomnia disorder.

Insomnia is an early predictor of certain mental health conditions, like depression. Depression and insomnia often go hand in hand. They each have a causal effect on each other. When you have depression, it can cause insomnia. When you have insomnia, you are at risk for depression.

Other long-term health consequences of insomnia include:

  • Weight gain and obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Concentration and memory problems

We’re proud to accept most major insurance providers, including commercial and Medicaid

Types and Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia is a symptom of a larger issue. When you identify the underlying cause, we can effectively treat your insomnia.

There are 3 main types of symptoms of insomnia:

  • Sleep-onset insomnia – trouble falling asleep
  • Sleep-maintenance insomnia – trouble staying asleep
  • Early waking Insomnia – when you wake very early (3:00, 4:00, 5:00 AM) and cannot go back to sleep

Each of the above types may be caused by different primary or secondary factors. There are primary factors, which cause primary insomnia, and secondary factors, which cause secondary insomnia.

Primary insomnia is where sleep problems are not linked to any health or substance conditions. Common causes include:

  • Stress and overwhelm, particularly worry and rumination
  • Environment  – noise, light, or temperature
  • Schedule changes, like jet lag, shift work
  • Genetics. Insomnia may run in families

Secondary Insomnia when sleep difficulties are a result of other conditions, such as health conditions or substance use:

  • Mental health issues like depression and anxiety
  • Certain medications
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Substance use, including caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs
  • Low blood sugar
  • Hormone or endocrine issues
  • Other sleep disorders, like sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome
  • Pregnancy
  • Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia
  • ADHD
  • PMS and menopause

Everyone’s experience and symptoms will be different depending on the factors that are causing their sleep issues. The most effective treatment will depend on the underlying cause of insomnia. This is why an accurate diagnosis is important.

Diagnosis of Insomnia at Mood Clinic

At Mood Clinic, we understand that several factors can cause insomnia. Rather than just give you a sleep aid for your insomnia, we take the time to understand what is behind your sleep issues so we can tailor a comprehensive treatment plan.

To make an accurate diagnosis we will conduct a full physical and psychiatric intake for each individual who comes to us with sleep issues. The intake includes a review of the following:

  • Physical exam, to uncover any underlying health conditions that may cause insomnia. This may include blood work.
  • Symptoms of insomnia
  • Family history of sleep disorders or other mental health conditions
  • Current or past treatments and medications
  • Past psychiatric history
  • Current or past substance use
  • Recent or past trauma
  • Stressors (life changes, financial, loss, etc.)

While it’s normal to experience sleep disturbances throughout life, having chronic or recurring insomnia can be debilitating. And because there are many reasons for insomnia, accurate and precise diagnosis is paramount to successful treatment.

We are insomnia experts at Mood Clinic. A professional assessment will help you understand your diagnosis and better communicate your needs for optimal health and well-being.

Treatment Options for Insomnia at Mood Clinic

Insomnia- CBT-I, Sleep restriction, stimulus control

When we tailor an insomnia treatment plan at Mood Clinic, we integrate several therapeutic techniques, including evidence-based practices, lifestyle medicine, and medication, depending on the patient’s severity and underlying cause of insomnia.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a first-line treatment for insomnia sufferers. CBT-I is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps you examine and restructure negative or unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that contribute to insomnia. CBT-I techniques involve stimulus control, sleep restriction, and relaxation training.

  • Sleep restriction therapy (SRT) – a behavioral process that aims to retrain the brain to sleep more efficiently by increasing the ratio of time spent asleep to time spent in bed. It starts with restricting the amount of time a person spends in bed overnight. Over the course of a few weeks, that time is gradually increased. The goal involves limiting the amount of time spent in bed to the time spent actually sleeping.

  • Stimulus Control –  therapy was designed to strengthen the association of the bed and bedroom as cues for sleep, and to disassociate the bedroom for awake-time activities.

  • Relaxation Training– Techniques that calm the mind and promote the body’s natural relaxation response. Practices like breathwork, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and hypnosis are commonly taught to clients for this purpose.

Lifestyle practices that promote relaxation and sleep, like healthy eating, physical activity, and stress management are also effective tools that we encourage clients to incorporate for managing many mental health conditions, including insomnia.

Medication may alleviate the anxiety that may accompany insomnia for some people. When we use medication, we will work closely to achieve maximum symptom reduction with the lowest effective medication dose. Our goal is to minimize side effects and tailor treatment to your needs.

Learning and creating positive sleep habits is a core part of insomnia treatment. Personalizing recommendations is best done with the help of a knowledgeable and empathetic practitioner. Personalized treatment means you’ll receive specialized care designed for you and delivered with compassion.
