Understanding Trauma & PTSD

When we experience a very stressful, scary, or distressing event that is difficult to cope with or out of our control, it can be considered traumatic.

Many people are able to cope with fear and overwhelm during and immediately after a traumatic event. However, that is not the case for everyone. Some continue to relive their experience over-and-over and develop PTSD.

Events or experiences that are life-threatening or emotionally disturbing, like an accident, violent crime, or natural disaster are all experiences that can cause trauma. Trauma can be physical, psychological, or emotional.

Common causes of trauma and PTSD include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical or emotional abuse, including neglect, discrimination
  • Acts of violence (assault, rape, terror attacks, mass shootings, etc)
  • Accidents
  • Illness or injury (disease, bodily harm, childbirth)
  • Natural disasters
  • Loss of a loved one, home, job
  • War & conflict

Anything that is perceived as a risk to one’s safety or feels life-threatening can elicit a trauma response.

There are 3 main categories of trauma, each with its own set of symptoms:

  • Acute trauma: A single, severe traumatic event, such as a car accident, childbirth, a natural disaster.
  • Complex trauma is the experience of multiple traumatic events at once or over time. It often occurs in childhood or adolescence, like abuse, neglect, or violence.
  • Chronic trauma: Repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing or harmful situations, such as domestic violence, sex trafficking, slavery war, or prisoner of war.

The severity and lasting effects of trauma can vary for everyone.

Symptoms of Trauma & PTSD

Symptoms of trauma and PTSD can look similar right after an event, but they progress differently. Common symptoms of both include:

  • Flashbacks and nightmares
  • Heightened arousal – trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, feeling jumpy, irritable
  • Feeling disconnected from oneself or outside of one’s body
  • Avoidance of places, people or other triggers that are reminders of the trauma
  • Issues with relationship issues
  • Social withdrawal or isolation
  • Being on high alert and easily startled
  • Mood swings
  • Anger outbursts
  • Unexplained aches and pain

Symptoms of trauma usually subside over time. Symptoms of PTSD are much more intense and troubling. With PTSD, the mind stays in a state of shock and the symptoms begin interfering with one’s ability to function normally.

Going through something traumatic doesn’t mean a person will develop PTSD. Everyone’s response to trauma will be different. Having strong support systems in place and building a sense of resilience are two factors that can influence how a person may respond to and recover from a traumatic experience.

When trauma is left untreated, it can take a toll on one’s mental health. Depression, substance use, conflict, anger issues, and fear can make holding a job or having quality relationships difficult.

At Mood Clinic, we understand the complexities of trauma and PTSD. We take the time to discuss your experiences, your symptoms and their severity, and the impact they are having on your life so we can differentiate whether you are dealing with trauma, or if it has progressed to PTSD.

Treatment Options for Trauma & PTSD at Mood Clinic

Our philosophy at Mood Clinic is that it is not enough to focus on treating and eliminating symptoms. We believe that treating the root cause of your trauma is what will help you make a full recovery.

There is not one treatment that is right for everyone when it comes to healing from trauma or PTSD.

Our trauma-informed therapist takes a compassionate and holistic approach to the treatment of trauma and PTSD. Each client receives a personalized treatment plan that will foster long-term healing. Holistic treatment typically includes a combination of evidence-based treatment modalities, medication, and/or lifestyle and mindfulness techniques.

Some of the therapeutic strategies that we use at Mood Clinic for trauma and PTSD treatment include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – We use a CBT approach to help you work through and rewire the brain in changing unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Rather than focus on the past, it is solution-based therapy.

Prolonged Exposure (PE) – a type of CBT that gradually and deliberately reintroduces trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations in an attempt to learn that the trauma-related memories or triggers are not dangerous, nor a threat and do not need to be avoided

Emotional Regulation/Grounding Techniques – Skills that promote awareness of the present moment. This technique helps survivors of trauma who experience panic attacks or flashbacks manage their traumatic memories or intense emotions and become calmer. Examples include breathwork, progressive muscle relaxation, or focus on the five senses.

Mindfulness – A cognitive skill that promotes an awareness of one’s internal state, emotions, surroundings, and bodily sensations.  Through this modality, we can help clients become aware of any triggers or reactions so they don’t become overwhelmed. Mindfulness practices, like yoga, meditation, and breathwork are useful tools in trauma and PTSD recovery.

Medication – Medication can be a useful tool for alleviating debilitating symptoms of trauma or PTSD so that the client and therapist can focus on getting to and treating the root cause of one’s condition. When we use medication with clients, we work closely to achieve maximum symptom reduction with the lowest effective medication dose. We want to minimize side effects and tailor treatment to their needs.

Lifestyle changes and holistic approaches – Lifestyle changes and holistic therapies like mindfulness, healthy eating, physical activity, hobbies, journaling, etc. can be very grounding for someone who has experienced trauma. Benefits of lifestyle approaches such as these include:

  • Stress relief, relaxation, and reduced tension
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Strengthened mental clarity
  • Improved mood
  • Positive outlook

FAQs about Trauma & PTSD

Trauma can impact people in many ways. Experiencing a traumatic event, like a natural disaster, car accident, or an act of violence can cause a person to react in many ways. Common and normal reactions to a trauma may include:

  • Negative thoughts and emotions (fear, shame, guilt)
  • Flashbacks, nightmares, recurring memories
  • Grief
  • Moodiness
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Panicky, agitation, anxiety

Usually these feelings lessen over time. When these feelings worsen or become prolonged, it could make a person more prone to mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, or PTSD.

Some people turn to alcohol, drugs, or self-harm to cope with difficult memories and emotions. Relationships can become strained, and even physical illness can manifest. That is why it’s important to get care as soon as possible when you have experienced a traumatic event.
